Cat – Reduction Linocut Print – Limited Edition of 23
This original, hand-printed reduction linocut of a cat is a distinctive and characterful artwork.
The 30 × 30 cm image is printed on high-quality paper measuring 35 × 35 cm. It is available in a limited edition of only 23 impressions.
Each print was created with 12 layers of Caligo Safe Wash oil-based relief ink, producing rich colours, depth and a vibrant tactile surface.
Every Impression Is Unique
Each colour was printed individually by hand, with more material carved away from the linoleum block before every new layer.
Natural variations in colour, ink distribution, texture and especially the cat’s eyes give every impression its own individual expression and character.
When selecting your print, you can choose the desired edition number and view an enlarged photograph of that specific impression.
Inspired by Everyday Life
My studio is situated in the countryside, where I hear sheep, horses and goats as I work. Animals bring me joy and frequently appear as subjects throughout my art.
The inspiration for this cat print came from a six-year-old boy who visited one of my exhibitions. As he looked around, he asked why there were no cows or cats—especially because his father is a farmer.
His question stayed with me and inspired me to create this artwork. The boy who gave me the idea will, of course, receive one of the prints as a gift.
The decorative style is influenced by Art Nouveau and artists such as William Morris and Alphonse Mucha, giving the print its graceful and timeless character.
An Irreversible Printing Process
More than two months and approximately 54 hours were spent designing, carving and printing this artwork.
The reduction technique involves carving more material away from the same linoleum block before each new colour is applied. Once the block has been carved for the next layer, it cannot be returned to an earlier stage.
Every step therefore requires careful planning, patience and precision. A video of the process is available on my YouTube channel, showing how the paper is carefully lifted from the block after each layer.
