Cow – Reduction Linocut Print – Limited Edition of 24
This original reduction linocut of a cow was printed entirely by hand with care and attention. The 30 × 30 cm image is printed on paper measuring approximately 35 × 35 cm.
This particular impression is numbered 2/24 and is printed on Japanese rice paper. Its layered colours and subtle printing variations give the artwork a distinctive character and a peaceful sense of countryside charm.
The Story Behind the Artwork
The inspiration for this print came from a six-year-old boy who visited one of my exhibitions. As he looked around, he wondered why there were no paintings of cows—especially because his father is a farmer.
His question stayed with me. My studio is situated in the countryside, where I hear sheep, horses and goats as I work. Animals bring me joy and are an important recurring subject throughout my art.
Creating a cow therefore felt like a natural and wonderful idea. The boy who inspired the artwork will, of course, receive one of the prints as a gift.
A Limited Hand-Printed Edition
The artwork was created in a limited edition of 24 impressions. Each print was made individually by hand using 10 layers of Caligo Safe Wash oil-based relief ink.
Subtle differences in the distribution and colour of the ink give every impression its own character while remaining part of the same cohesive edition.
An Irreversible Printing Process
The reduction technique involves carving more material away from the same linoleum block before each new colour is printed.
Once a layer has been completed and the block has been carved again, there is no possibility of returning to an earlier stage. Every decision is permanent, making careful planning, patience and precision essential throughout all 10 layers.
A process video on my YouTube channel shows how the paper is carefully lifted from the linoleum block after each printed layer.
Paper Variations Within the Edition
Different papers were used within this edition as part of my exploration of their individual printing qualities:
Numbers 1–7: Japanese rice paper
Numbers 8–11: 180 gsm Fabriano HP paper
Numbers 12–24: 300 gsm Fabriano HP paper
The selected impression shown here is number 2/24, printed on Japanese rice paper.
