Sheep – Reduction Linocut Print – Limited Edition of 10
This original reduction linocut of a sheep was printed entirely by hand in my studio in the Dutch countryside.
The artwork was created using 12 carefully built-up layers of Caligo Safe Wash oil-based relief ink. These layers create a warm, richly textured image filled with character. Surrounded by delicate patterns, the sheep conveys a gentle sense of tranquillity and simplicity.
The print is available in a strictly limited edition of only 10 impressions.
Inspired by Countryside Life
My studio is situated in a rural environment, where I hear sheep, horses and goats every day. Animals bring me joy and are recurring subjects throughout my work.
For this print, I was inspired by Art Nouveau, with its graceful lines, decorative forms and delicate details. The style also reflects the influence of artists and designers such as William Morris and Alphonse Mucha.
Every Impression Is Unique
Every impression is printed individually by hand and therefore has its own subtle variations. The texture and colour of the sheep’s fleece are slightly different in each print.
Because I apply the ink with a roller by hand and mix the colours separately for every printing stage, no two impressions are exactly alike.
When placing an order, you can select an edition number and view an enlarged photograph of that specific impression.
An Irreversible Printing Process
The reduction technique involves carving more material away from the same linoleum block after every printed layer.
Once a colour has been printed and the block has been carved again, there is no possibility of returning to an earlier stage. The process requires careful planning, patience and precision throughout all 12 carving and printing stages.
More than two months were spent designing, carving and printing this artwork. A video of the process is available on my YouTube channel, showing how the paper is carefully lifted from the block after each layer.
